In a special lecture on October 21, Tom Boyd will discuss his new book, A Father's Son: The Development of an Entrepreneur, where he traces the experiences and influences of three generations of a family, from the hardscrabble days of the Great Depression to the present in the shaping of lives today. He especially explores the hardships, determination, and joys of entrepreneurship through the story of his son, Randy Boyd, whom he mentored in business from the age of six until he branched out on his own at 23 to become one of the state's most successful businessmen. Randy is well known as a civic leaders, philanthropist, gubernatorial candidate, and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. As a further sign of achievement, Randy, the first in his family to graduate from college, was recently appointed as the interim president of the University of Tennessee Board of Trustees.
The lecture is presented by the East Tennessee Historical Society and is free and open to the public. The lecture will begin at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, October 21, at the East Tennessee History Center, 601 S. Gay Street, Knoxville.
