Dr. Michelle Commander of the Africana Studies program, University of Tennessee, will lead a discussion of the Octavia Butler novel, Kindred, in which a young African American woman is wrenched through time from 1976 back to antebellum Maryland, where she meets her ancestors: a white slave owner and the proud black free woman he has forced into slavery. The novel explores the dynamics and dilemmas of antebellum slavery and its legacy in the present. Program will take place at the East Tennessee History Center at 6:30 p.m. Free and open to the public.
Presented in partnership: Friends of the Knox County Public Library and the East Tennessee Historical Society
