The Knox County Archives preserves and provides public access to the permanent records of this historic county (1792-present). These include deeds, marriages, divorces, school records, various court records, and more. Records have suffered no major destruction and are remarkably intact.
Knox County was established in 1792, four years prior to Tennessee statehood, during which time the area was then known as the Southwest Territory or “Territory South of the River Ohio.” Knox was created from Greene and Hawkins counties. In the early years, portions of Knox were carved to form new counties: Blount (1795), Grainger (1796), Anderson (1801), Roane (1801), and Union (1850). Researchers for records of these counties prior to their dates of creation are advised to also consult Knox County holdings.
