Exchange Place Breaks Ground for Burow Museum

About 40 people gathered Monday, May 19, 2014, at Exchange Place for a ceremony celebrating the beginning of the reconstruction of the historic Gaines-Anderson House at Exchange Place.

The houses were located at the intersection of Stone Drive and Bancroft Chapel Road and were donated to Exchange Place Living History Farm by Bancroft Ministries.

The two historic log houses c. 1796 were donated to Exchange Place. The house was build by Ambrose Gaines, an uncle to John Gaines who developed Exchange Place in the early 1800s.  In honor of longtime volunteers Dick and Suzanne Burow, the Gaines-Anderson House will also be known as The Burow Museum and will serve as a center to interpret the life of a mid-1800s East Tennessee home and farmstead.

It has been the Burows' desire for many years to develop such a museum in order to provide education about farm life and the importance of Exchange Place to Kingsport's history. This museum will also serve as a place to demonstrate early pioneer skills, and provide space for other similar educational endeavors.
